UMass Lowell Research Facilities – Tour Options & Descriptions

Visit these UMass Lowell facilities to enhance your FST experience! Two different tours are available and both are are run simultaneously, so please choose just one per day. Limit 40 people per tour, first come first serve (sign up on site). The same tours are offered both Tuesday and Friday to accommodate travel schedules and to offer a chance to experience both options.

  • Tuesday, April 9 at 4:30 pm – both tours leave by shuttle bus from the UMass Lowell Inn & Conference Center (Plus Code)
  • Friday, April 12 at 9:00 am – Tour #1 parking available on site; Tour #2 board shuttle bus in front of the Tsongas Center

Tour #1: 110 Canal Building (Downtown Lowell)
This facility was recently acquired and renovated to house new laboratories and a new entrepreneurship center. The tour lasts approximately 40 minutes and includes:

iHub – UMass Lowell Innovation Hub

The UMass Lowell Innovation Hub offer entrepreneurs, startups, technology companies and established manufacturing partners 24-hour access to all the amenities they need to get their businesses up and running including dedicated office space, prototyping labs, and a conference area.

Fabric Discovery Center (FDC)

The UMass Lowell Fabric Discovery Center is home to the first and only site in the nation that integrates discoveries from three Manufacturing USA Innovation Institutes.

NERVE Center

The New England Robotics Validation and Experimentation (NERVE) Center at UMass Lowell is an interdisciplinary robotics testing, research, and training facility that evaluates robotic capabilities, human performance, and human-robot interaction. You will see the NERVE Center’s labs and testbeds used for physiology experiments, exoskeletons, ground and aerial robots used for disaster response, and autonomous robots. NERVE staff will facilitate demonstrations of robots and test equipment.

Tour #2: HEROES and ETIC (Main Campus)

Harnessing Emerging Research Opportunities to Empower Soldiers (HEROES)

Located in the Olney building, the HEROES is a collaborative research and development initiative between UMass Lowell and the Combat Capabilities Development Command (CCDC) Soldier Center – U.S. Army Natick. Faculty and students and CCDC scientists and engineers work side by side developing novel flame-retardant coatings, sensors for detecting toxins in water, conformal photovoltaics for soldier power, and other projects pertaining to the technological needs of U.S Soldiers.

Saab Emerging Technologies & Innovation Center (ETIC)

The Saab ETIC is a short walk from the HEROES lab. It is a new 84,000-square-foot, $80 million state-of-the-art research and academic facility. Inside you’ll find several centers, including:

Nanomanufacturing Center – The Nanomanufacturing Center at UMass Lowell has research and equipment related to nano, micro, and macroscale processing with focus on polymeric materials. You will see the labs and unique equipment for roll-to-roll offset printing of materials, embossing of structures, and fabrication of nanocomposites as platforms for films (for substrates in FHE applications), filaments (for 3D printing), and fibers. Research areas include superhydrophobic and omniphobic surfaces for corrosion resistance, drag reduction, printing of conductive nanomaterials and stretchable conductors for sensors and soft robotics, and elastomers for barrier applications.

Printed Electronics Research Collaborative (PERC) – The Printed Electronics Research Collaborative (PERC) is a strategic partnership between industry, university and government. It includes companies of all sizes, public and private universities, and U.S. Department of Defense and New England partners to strengthen and expand the region’s capabilities in printed and flexible electronics.

Raytheon-UMass Lowell Research Institute (RURI) – RURI is centered on advanced materials and flexible circuit technologies. The partnership provides UMass Lowell students with invaluable opportunities for research and employment at Raytheon.

Center for Advanced Materials

Founded in 1992, the Center for Advanced Materials (CAM) has become the focus of advanced materials synthesis and characterization at UMass Lowell. CAM is an association of scientists, engineers, and technicians encompassing a wide range of technical disciplines that overlap UMass Lowell’s Colleges of Sciences and Engineering.
